About
Holey Moley on the Sunshine Coast is an indoor mini-golf course with a serious twist. It’s located inside the Big Top Shopping Centre in Maroochydore, and it’s not your average putt-putt experience. Each of the holes is wildly creative and based on a different pop culture theme, from The Simpsons to Game of Thrones. The whole place has a vibrant, almost nightclub-like atmosphere with colourful lighting and upbeat music. Beyond the golf, it's a full entertainment venue with a bar (they call it The Caddyshack) that serves up creative cocktails and mocktails, as well as a menu of pizzas, burgers, and hot dogs. It’s a loud, high-energy spot that combines a classic family activity with the fun of a quirky themed bar.
Age Appropriateness
This is a bit of a mixed bag, so it really depends on your family. While kids are definitely welcome, it's important to know that Holey Moley is a licensed venue. Before 8:00 PM, under-18s are allowed in as long as they are with a responsible adult. After 8:00 PM, the venue becomes strictly for adults (18+). Because of the bar and the sometimes-loud atmosphere, it’s probably best suited for kids aged 8 and up who can appreciate the fun themes and won’t be overwhelmed by the sensory input. Toddlers and very young children might find it a bit much, and honestly, there isn't a lot for them to do besides the golf itself.
The Highlights (Pros)
The absolute best part is the creativity of the golf holes. They are genuinely fun and impressive, making for fantastic photo opportunities. The nostalgia factor is huge for parents, with themes that will take you right back to your own childhood. The venue is also incredibly clean and well-maintained. We didn't see any rubbish or sticky spots, which is always a relief. Having food and drinks available on-site is a major plus; you can make a whole afternoon or evening out of it without having to go somewhere else for a meal. The location within the Big Top is also convenient, offering undercover access which is perfect for a rainy day activity.
The Watch-Outs (Cons)
The biggest thing to be aware of is that it can get very busy and loud, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Because it’s also a popular spot for adult groups and parties, the vibe can feel less "family-friendly" as the evening progresses. The cost can also add up quickly. You pay per person, per game, and when you add food and drinks on top, it can become a pricey outing for a whole family. Some of the holes are in tighter spaces, so when it's crowded, you can feel a bit squished and spend time waiting for the group ahead of you to finish, which isn't always easy with impatient kids.
Practical Survival Tips for Parents
- Book Online: Absolutely book your session in advance, especially if you're going during a peak time. It saves you from waiting around or being turned away if they're at capacity.
- Go Early: The best time to take kids is during the day, right when they open, or on a weekday afternoon. The atmosphere is much more relaxed and family-focused before the evening crowds arrive.
- Parking: There is undercover parking available at the Big Top Shopping Centre. It can get busy, but we found a spot without too much trouble.
- Check for Deals: Keep an eye on their website for family deals or school holiday specials, which can make the outing more affordable.
- Manage Expectations: Have a chat with the kids beforehand about taking turns and being patient. With the stimulating environment, a little prep can go a long way in preventing meltdowns.
