About
Hey fellow parents! If you're looking for a day trip that’s a bit different from the usual playground run, Kryal Castle is definitely one to consider. It’s a medieval adventure park and resort, basically a full-blown replica of a fantasy castle, just outside Ballarat. Think knights, wizards, dragons, and all that magical stuff brought to life. The whole place is a sprawling village with a moat, drawbridge, and a maze. Throughout the day, there's a schedule of live shows and activities, from jousting tournaments with knights in full armor to potion-making classes in a wizard's workshop. It's an immersive experience where the kids (and let's be honest, us too) can step back in time and get a taste of a fantasy world.
Age Appropriateness
This is a fantastic spot for primary school-aged kids, roughly from 4 to 10 years old. They are at the perfect age to be completely swept up in the magic of knights, princesses, and dragons. The shows are engaging for this group, and activities like the Bravehearts Playground and the Dragon's Labyrinth are tailor-made for their energy levels. Toddlers will probably enjoy the spectacle of the horses and the general atmosphere, but many of the specific activities might go over their heads. Tweens and younger teens who are into fantasy or history will still find plenty to enjoy, especially the jousting and the torture museum (which is suitably creepy!), but those who have outgrown make-believe might find it a bit young.
The Highlights (Pros)
The absolute standout is the jousting tournament. The knights are skilled, the action is exciting, and it feels like you’re watching a real medieval spectacle. It’s held in a covered arena, so it runs regardless of the weather. The staff and actors really commit to their roles, staying in character and interacting with the kids, which adds so much to the experience. Another big win is the variety of hands-on activities included in the entry price. Kids can try archery, watch a blacksmith at work, learn sword fighting, and mix potions in the wizard’s tower. The park is also surprisingly clean and well-maintained, and the layout, while hilly, is manageable. We found the grounds themselves, with the stone walls and turrets, were just fun to explore.
The Watch-Outs (Cons)
The biggest watch-out is the cost. It’s not a cheap day out, especially once you factor in food, drinks, and any souvenirs from the gift shop. Speaking of food, the options on-site are fairly limited and what you'd expect from a theme park—think pizza, pies, and hot dogs. It can get pricey and may not suit pickier eaters or those with dietary restrictions. The park is built on a pretty steep hill, which can be a real workout with a pram or for little legs. While there is a path, be prepared for some uphill trekking between the main entrance and the tournament arena at the top. Also, some of the attractions can feel a little dated, but the kids honestly didn't seem to notice or care.
Practical Survival Tips for Parents
- Book Online: You can usually save a bit of money by purchasing your tickets online in advance.
- Pack a Lunch: To save money and avoid the queues, packing your own picnic is a great idea. There are plenty of grassy spots where you can lay down a blanket and enjoy your own food.
- Arrive Early: Get there for opening time to snag a good parking spot near the entrance. It also gives you time to get your bearings and see the first shows of the day without feeling rushed.
- Plan Your Day: Grab a schedule and map as soon as you walk in. The shows are the main event, so figure out which ones are must-sees and plan your other activities around them. The jousting is usually on twice a day, so you have a couple of chances to catch it.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: I cannot stress this enough! With the hilly terrain and the amount of walking you’ll do, comfortable, sturdy shoes are an absolute must for the whole family.
- Pram vs. Carrier: If you have a baby or toddler, a carrier might be easier than a pram due to the steep inclines in some areas. If you do bring a pram, make sure it's a sturdy one
